For centuries Maca root has been used in South America as a sexual and endurance enhancer and to stimulate libido. It is also well known for its benefits to menopausal women using the supplement instead of hormone replacement therapy. The product seems to have a pronounced regulatory effect on the endocrine system.
In April, 2004, the Prostate Awareness Foundation announced the start of an anecdotal trial on the botanical supplement. Ken Malik, the executive director of PAF, and others who participated in the Prostate Cancer Climb to Mt Kilimanjaro used Maca to enhance their general endurance for the climb. Malik says, “Maca seems to have worked in this respect, as all of the PAF climbers reached the 19,341’ summit.”
As impressive as this was, the most dramatic claims came from men with prostate cancer who are on Androgen Deprivation Therapy (ADT). This therapy is designed to reduce levels of the male hormones, called androgens, in the body. The main androgen is testosterone. Androgens, produced mainly in the testicles, stimulate prostate cancer cells to grow. Lowering androgen levels often makes prostate cancers shrink or grow more slowly. Unfortunately, a side effect of this therapy is the elimination of the libido. “ADT is a form of chemical castration, men on ADT should not have a libido!” Malik said. “But surprisingly some men on ADT were reporting a strong libido and sexual appetite while taking Maca root extract. These claims led to the decision to conduct an anecdotal trial to test Maca’s possibilities.
The Trial The goal of the anecdotal trial was to determine if the regular use of maca root extract would have an effect on PSA levels, libido, sexual function and the general endurance level in men with diagnosed prostate cancer. Included in the trial were men who had undergone or are currently undergoing a number of different treatment paths including: radiation, ADT hormonal blockade treatment, radical surgical removal (prostatectomy) or are in various stages of watchful waiting while instituting dietary and lifestyle changes.
More studies are needed, but the initial results were very promising. There were no dramatic increases or decreases of PSA in the men reporting at the end of the trial. Maca seemed to have a positive effect on the sexual energy of 75% of the men in the trial. The primary side effect of ADT therapy, a loss of libido, did not seem to prove out in this trial!
The Conclusion "Although the results are preliminary and the sample small, the initial results look promising and we feel merit further study. The product does not appear to have a profound effect on PSA levels, is relatively inexpensive and seems to enhance the sexual and general energy of a majority of men who take it."-Prostate Awareness Foundation.
While we have always discouraged the use of maca for men with a hormonally related cancer, such as prostate cancer, this study will perhaps shed new light on this. Of course, until more studies have been done, we continue to discourage the use of maca under these circumstances.
