Testosterone declines as women reach menopause Tests show that a woman's levels of the male sex hormone decline as she approaches menopause.
All women have some testosterone in their bodies, although levels are naturally much lower than those in their male counterparts. Testosterone in women has been linked to libido and other aspects of sexual functioning, well being, energy levels and bone health.
While much research has focused upon the decline in the female sex hormone estrogen as women reach menopause, little is known of what happens to testosterone. Researchers in Melbourne, Australia, have used very sensitive blood tests to find out how testosterone and related hormones change in the menopausal years.
They tested a group of 245 healthy women with normal libido - 170 of whom were pre-menopausal and 75 of whom were post-menopausal and using estrogen replacement. The tests showed that testosterone declines significantly as women approach menopause. This could be because other hormones, like dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA), decline. DHEA - often promoted as an anti-aging supplement - is a key hormone which is converted into testosterone in the body. It's hoped that such study of testosterone might lead to a better understanding of women's health.
